Making Caregiving Compatible with Work, Harvard Business Review

In her new book, Unfinished Business, Anne-Marie Slaughter calls for a major mindset shift by business leaders and managers. Today, she points out, women are primary breadwinners in 40 percent of households; by 2020 more than one in three Americans will be caring for an elder person; and Millennial men particularly yearn for more connection with and opportunity to care for family members. She implores business decision-makers to recognize that caring for children, elders, and others in need is part of a life portfolio for almost all workers, whether they show it or not. Legislators may enact policies, and individual workers may find coping strategies to integrate work and caring commitments, but the workplace is the nexus of this challenge and the place to create practical solutions.

Journée d’étude internationale « Les femmes en milieu professionnel : une position subalterne par défaut ? », Nantes, 18 octobre 2014

La Faculté des Langues et Cultures Étrangères de l’Université de Nantes et le CRINI (Centre de Recherche sur les Idéntités Nationales et l’Interculturalité) organisent le 18 octobre 2014 une journée d’étude intitulée

 « Les femmes en milieu professionnel : une position subalterne par défaut ? »

« Women in a professional context: underlings by default? »

De 9h00 à 17h30, Campus Tertre, Salle 410, Faculté des Langues et Cultures Étrangères, Université de Nantes

Cette journée d’étude internationale s’intéressera aux différents facteurs historiques, sociopolitiques et culturels depuis 1945 susceptibles d’éclairer la situation actuelle des femmes en milieu professionnel dans différents pays de l’Union Européenne. Les liens entre work-life balance et carrière seront explorés par certaines des communications présentées lors de cette journée.

8th European Conference on Gender Equality in Higher Education: two panels on work-life articulation in academia – Vienna, September 3-5, 2014

The European conferences on gender equality in higher education have since 1998 brought regularly together hundreds of gender equality practitioners, researchers and administrators from Europe and beyond. The conferences provide an international forum to discuss and exchange information and experiences and share research results on the changes and challenges related to gender in academia, gender equality promotion and interventions in higher education and research institutions.

This year the conference will take place in Vienna and it will host two panels on the themes of work-life articulation in academia.

The European Employers’ Forum for Work-life Balance, Helsinki, Finland, 8-9 September 2014

COFACE, in collaboration with its Finnish member Väestöliitto, The Family Federation of Finland is organising the European Employers’ Forum for Work Life Balance on September 8-9 in Helsinki.

The forum will bring together employers from the private, public and third sectors to discuss family friendly workplace measures for offering a better work-life balance for their employees. It will be a mix of global and local employers, large and small companies, with a special focus on retail, healthcare and other sectors that are not lending themselves easily for tele-working or other standard measures.
