APPEL A COMMUNICATION : “Work-family reconciliation policies, processes, and gender (in)equalities”

Over the past decade, work-family research has been increasingly concerned with exploring how policies influence the gendered division of paid and unpaid work. Although existing studies have documented some short- and medium-term effects of work-family reconciliation policies, such as parental leave or childcare provision, progress towards gender equality as a result of existing policies has been slow. Most studies have focused on broad policy indicators at the national level rather than examining specific policy designs and packages. Due to data availability, some policy areas have received more attention than others. Moreover, more evidence is needed on the processes or mechanisms through which policies or institutional contexts affect gender inequalities at the individual or household level.

This session seeks to advance the academic debate on work-family reconciliation policies and social mechanisms by exploring the conceptualization or outcomes of policies or related processes which may (or fail to) promote greater gender equality. Examples for under-researched policy aspects include inter alia employer-provided policies, legal quotas for women on advisory boards, aspects of work flexibility, or childcare quality. We are inviting proposals for presentations that conceptualize or empirically investigate either the consequences of work-family reconciliation policies or under-researched processes through which institutions may impact gender (in)equalities in paid and unpaid work. Methodologically, promising approaches for exploring policy impact and processes include longitudinal data analyses, insightful comparisons within and across countries, as well as smaller-scale program interventions.
